I continue to be amazed at ways that I can accomplish things in SpaceClaim, using techniques that would have never made sense with a feature modeler. One approach I use more and more is cross sectional creation and editing, which works especially well on prismatic and rotationally-symmetric shapes. Taking advantage of edge move and a bit of slice-and-dice, you can quickly achieve compelling results with cross sectional direct modeling. Here’s a little video of me playing with the technique, inspired by a flashlight sitting on my desk:

To try to give you an idea how what using SpaceClaim feels like when you know it pretty well, I’ve left the video unedited. In it, I make some mistakes and show you how I recover. This is the real deal. (The voice over was added later.)
As this community explores different direct modelers, I’d love to see what workflows you guys can come up with, in SpaceClaim or any other 3D design system. How think about your model? How do you like to edit it? I’ve included the battery and reflector assembly so you can make your own flashlight, both in SpaceClaim and STEP formats.
Can anyone else come up with something cool?
