SpaceClaiming

The Online Community About Exciting New CAD Technologies

All, we are planning the next release of SpaceClaim and I would be interested to hear what you most want added to the product. I most would like to see some discussion of the background of the need for the enhancements, as opposed to just a list. Comments on others items are welcome too.

hi frank,

I'm quite a fresh user of the spaceclaim LTX/rhino combination and I frequently have a problem with the proper conversion of geometry when pressing the 'spaceclaim-export' button.

There seems to be an issue concerning units. As I already wrote in another disscussion which I started, very often rhino solids show up as surfaces in spaceclaim when switching back and forth. I found out, that scaling the rhino drawing by 1000 helps but my suggestion would be to fix this via an adoption in either rhino or spaceclaim.

Another feature that I would miss a lot is to be able to simply move an object or a component by draging it and having object-snaps to bring it exactly to the point.
May be that's because I'm not yet fully aquainted to the spaceclaim way of moving objects but perhaps this more familiar
way of moving objects could come to spaceclaim as well even though the concept is obviously a different one.

Here's another one - I'm working with a WACOM tablet since more then 10 years and won't like going back to using a mouse at all. Spaceclaim works fine with that tablet, but when it comes to picking points its getting tricky, cause that is one of the few things that are more convinient to accomplish with a mouse.
A solution could be to make the points appear larger and have them become more 'sensitive' as an adjustable option.

Another one :) - I'm working with a 'space traveller' as well...which works perfectly with rhino and sketchup.
In spaceclaim however its very hard to navigate. I tried all possible options, but the issue seems to be spaceclaim related.
Especially zooming is a pain.

Finally I have to state, that I'm very pleased with spaceclaim and I'm very confident that over the time I will find out more
about the conceps behind spaceclaim and how to most effectively work with it.

max respect

Thank you for the reply. It is a little tricky to ask for feedback before you have seen Release 4 (2009) of SC, but here goes. I think you are going to be very happy with the Units enhancements, and drag objects capabilities that you have asked for, and are improved in R4. As you know, we benefit from working with specific customer examples all the time to make sure that our Rhino-SC integration continues to improve. As for the dragging things, you can do that by dragging objects around by their vertices, and snapping to other vertices -- or you can use the toolguides in the move tool (for anchoring and orientation and direction) to customize your movement to be exactly as you wish, even with dimensional control.

I like your idea of making selection of vertices easier -- do you ever use the selection filter to have only vertices be grabbable? {Not that I like filters in general for that sort of thing.} In R3, you couldn't do too much with vertice; but in R4, since you can do so much more with them we had to enhance their selection, pretty much as you describe. I will let it be a surprise, all the new things they are useful for in R4.

Can you give a bit more detail about what is hard about using the SpaceTraveler for zooming?
Thanks
F

hello frank,

concerning the space-traveller: It lets me do everything like expected, except zooming in and out.

It takes ages to zoom in and when zooming out it would shot me to outer space.

As I said - I already tweaked all possible adjustment-sliders and options. No change of the behaviour.

I'm running the very newest driver.

My grafic card is NVIDIA 9650M GT (1GB) and I had to disable the animated zoom, because of
very slow (?) performance. Sometimes the machine seemed to freeze and it took quite a while
until it came back to response.

Since animated zoom is disabled it works fine...The newest driver is installed.

I'm mentioning this, because it might give you a clou...I'm also parallely using a WACOM bamboo fun tablet and a logitec remote keyboard with addtional mouse.

when will R4 be available for download?

Thanks for the additional information on the space traveler. Have you contacted Technical Support and have they filed a bug for us on it yet?

Regarding R4 (SC 2009) it will be available in mid-February.

Hi Frank! It's great to speak directly with SpaceClaim team.

I've been using SpaceClaim for two months and I'm not an expert user. I use SpaceClaim to simplify CAD models (that I receive in STEP format) for FEA applications (NEiNastran, ProMechanica).

I'd like that SpaceClaim could manage (in most cases deleting) complex rounds, expecially when they overlap.

That sounds like an ideal use case for SC.
I think you are going to be very happy with the round removal/model simplification techniques added to R4.

Hi Frank, what do you mean with R4? It is the next release? I'm using SC 2008 SP3.

Reply to This

Sorry, it is just easier for me to think/speak in (R)eleases. R3 = SC 2008, and R4 = SC 2009.

Hello Frank
I feel its really great that you, as a part of SpaceClaim team, is directly interacting with the Users. I really feel this would boost the progress of SpaceClaim.

I request the SC team, if they could produce a software for smart phones or PDA. I feel that SC and AutoCAD creates really small file size and the smart phones & PADs have capability to open them. That should just have navigation tools like zoom, pan, rotate & fit / resize to window, along with that measuring dimensions, putting annotations and taking a snap of it. I feel that this would be really easy & good for CAD people to share their concepts on a run, this would save a lot of time, opening the system (laptops, desktop) opening the software & loading the file. Already there are softwares that could open AutoCAD files.

What is a reasonable expectation of how large (in faces) a model you would want to be able to visualize on a phone? (anyone?)

Reply to This

I think simply a viewer and markup tool should do the work on Phone. This tool should open files/drawings and check for errors, put suggestion, measure dimentions etc. eDrawings is a very good tool from SolidWorks, something similar for phones should be very interesting.

hello frank,

there is one thing, that I still wonder about with SC.

Its kernel is based on spatial ACIS-technology if I got that right....why is'nt the SAT/SAB Format one of the standard formats but only available in the pro-version?

I just wonder, because I switched to SC from MegaCAD2008 (which was my 'weapon' when it came to SAT-files)
and I was quite amazed, that SC offeres STEP, IGES and 3dm, but no SAT-support, which I did'nd exspect.

Actually the SAT-format has become quite common in the meantime and even MoI3d (www.moi3d.com) or Alibres free version are offering a SAT-interface. (Even Rhino has a building-block-based export up to ACIS-V4.)

I'm getting along with those for the time beeing, but I wonder, if the SAT-format should'nt be one of the standard formats in the non-pro-versions of SC.

oh - by the way - do you see a chance to get into contact with michael gibson (MoI3d) to talk about an interface for MoI3d like the one in Rhino. At the moment I use the clipboard to send the MoI-3dm-files to Rhino and then to SC. It works but is inconvinient.
