SpaceClaiming

The Online Community About Exciting New CAD Technologies

All, we are planning the next release of SpaceClaim and I would be interested to hear what you most want added to the product. I most would like to see some discussion of the background of the need for the enhancements, as opposed to just a list. Comments on others items are welcome too.

A STL file converter/editor to editable file would make a nice feature.
When will R5 be available?

For instance CopyCad from Delcam does a great job on this called tribit modelling.

Spaceclaim 2009+ has been available since 17th of November. It is full of good improvements.
I agree, the conversion to .stl also seems a bit coarse at the moment. It should be possible to export with higher resolution than currently, I think.

Best,

I actually mean a STL file import possibility and an STL editor to edit the STL file with push/pull.

Indeed, there appear to be those situations, where one would like to import and tweak STL, because nothing else is available.
A few days ago I had one situation, where a client wanted some modifications to an existing design, but only the parts modeled during the most recent design process were available as IGES. Parts they got from another supplier were only available as an STL 'model'. Probably made for RPT and visualization.

Also, there is this department upstairs where they use rendering software to visualize what they call design, though I prefer to call it ideas. They output STL or similar, meshed stuff anyway, and it could be good to be able to deal with that, and if it only was to keep the components already shaped, maybe adjust them as you go, while adding clean engineering and surfacing.

I am still experimenting with spaceclaim. In a separate post I have mentioned some problems with backwards compatibility that I've encountered.

It would be great if there were a way to disable the Direct 3d "eye candy" that augments the user interface--a graphics compatibility mode for older PCs. I think this would improve the first impression of many potential buyers.

Because spaceclaim is intended to accept many different file formats it could be an ideal tool to encourage communication between younger and older engineers in an work environment. Spacelaim could be used to prevent the "brain drain" that occurs when real world experience and analysis is replaced by computational simulations.

Parametric connectivity to other file formats like excel, matlab, mathcad etc... would be very useful.

It would be helpful for me to know what graphics capabilities you would consider "eye-candy" to help us differentiate them from the required functions. Today we auto-detect the graphics card capabilities and knowing that, we disable things like transparency effects and alti-aliasing. These can also be overridden in the Options UI, along with the animation for view manipulation changes and animation of the effects of a Complete Pull operation.
Let me know

The computer crashed when I attempted to execute a "Pull" command.

Regarding animations: I noticed that when switching between view orientations the latest version animates the change in perspective. I like the look of this sort of feature and it seems to convey a good intuitive view of the part geometry but it may have contributed to the crash. It would be good to be able to disable it or even to have a single button that disables all extended graphics features for the new user evaluating the product.

There is an option in the SC Options>Advanced, called "Animate changes to view projection" that disables this functionality.

Please contact support so that they can work with you to get to the bottom of the crash -- you should not have to debug this on your own.

Thank you, I'll give tech support a call. I think there is a false impression that engineers and machinists have the fastest and newest computers. It may be worthwhile to have some kind of compatibility mode for older machines--perhaps just for marketing purposes.

Hi,Anyone know how to scale the main design window?I design small objects and would like to see them at a 1:1 scale. In other words, if the object is 8mm by 6mm, I would like to see it life-size on the screen. I can do it on a drawing sheet but that…
