The Online Community About Exciting New CAD Technologies

3D ENGR just posted a little review and breakdown of Alibre as a part of a series of CAD alternatives. The main selling point, according to Chris 3D, is price and at $97/seat Alibre is incredibly affordable.

"Really if it comes down to price there are few if any other options that compare. To my knowledge there are no free options that create quality manufacturing drawings, and Alibre delivers on that for as close to free as it comes. The pricing structure does make a jump though, from $97 to $499 . Learning the software is relatively easy and users with experience will find the standard tools easily, though the minor details (click-hold>drag vs. click>drag) can be cumbersome at first. For companies with basic designs and no desire for flashy renderings, where documentation is required and cost is always a concern Alibre fits right in. Hobbyists and DIYers looking for a cheap, functional solution also should check it out. The 30-day trial is always free and if it doesn't work out there is surely no harm."

We bought five or six seats of the pricey version some time ago, as it appeared to be just what we needed and not have all the overhead we did not want. It was not overly hard to use, though also not overly easy, mimicking the likes of SW and SE in many places, plus some own elements, so users familiar with other standard CAD had no real issues working with it. We used it for a while and then found that is was not up to the task, especially in a collaborative environment. As soon as file exchange over a server came into play it was short of being dangerous, with it's cryptic direct file paths to intransparent repositories that actually made backups and integration in project archives impossible, unless you wanted to manually restore (or rather 'hack) the config of every single project on every single machine in the house once a disk was swapped, an archive reopened, a backup copied back or a server volume renamed. Most of the collaborative features we wanted were not available when working in usual file directories instead of the repositories, and a server application that was said to be included as the solution never became available at the time. The support seemed to be on a defensive standpoint most of the time and acted like we only lived to prove the problems of the program, of which we found many, unfortunately. We had many crashes, and many corrupted files, especially in large projects.
Maybe they have improved since, and maybe for a single user environment it's okay, though for us, with training sessions and all, lost files and lost time, oh so cheap Alibre was quite an expensive experience.

Hey
Frank,
I am regular user and in-fact tech. support person for Alibre & Rhino in INDIA-Pune. I know Alibre since its V5...! Its always been my Fav. CAD tool. Those who have innovative approach & always look for new potentials I recommend this Alibre is perfect combination.

Alibre has revolutionized CAD industry......! Unfortunately in INDIA people have different mindset...... they assume that, if it is cheap then it is not worth!......... but they do not know what they are loosing.

I give 9 points out of 10 to Alibre tool!!!

Hi,Anyone know how to scale the main design window?I design small objects and would like to see them at a 1:1 scale. In other words, if the object is 8mm by 6mm, I would like to see it life-size on the screen. I can do it on a drawing sheet but that…
